Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device

Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology:

The Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device can be read in bright sunlight without glare with an all-new, high-contrast E Ink Screen with latest E Ink Pearl technology giving 50% better contrast than prior models.

It has a new sleek design with 21% smaller body than the previous model while still retaining the same reading area of 6″. The fonts are crisper and darker with faster page turns leading to seamless reading.  Additionally, because of the enhanced PDF reader you have dictionary lookup, highlights and notes.  There is also a new web-kit based browser with free 3G web browsing – though this function is still at the experimental stage.

You can download books anytime, anywhere and at anytime – you can store up to 3,500 books – double the storage of previous models.

There are no monthly payments and no annual contracts because it has free 3G Wireless – and in addition, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots.

A single battery charge lasts up to one month with wireless off. It weighs less than a paperback at only 8.7 ounces.

“Its solid build quality, along with its improved design, integrated store, and cross-platform transportability… all add up to a winner that shoots to the head of the pack.”

“Someone found some companies that sell Kindle batteries at reasonable cost and have how-to videos that demonstrate how we can replace the battery ourselves. Doing this would void the Kindle’s warranty, but the battery will probably not fail until long after the warranty expires.”

“I have no way of precisely measuring the improvement in contrast, but I can tell you that the Kindle 3 display definitely has more contrast than Kindle 2 or Nook.”

It has a built-in Wi-Fi connection which will allow you to surf the web, check email, read a blog or search Google.

For social networking you can recommend books and share passages via Twitter and Facebook.

From a technical perspective it has 8GB built-in memory (equivalent to about 6000 books) and 169 pixels per inch which thus gives a better picture quality than many of its competitors.  It uses the Android operating system which gives access to new apps as they are released.

You have access to exclusive NOOKbook Personal Shopping and you can enjoy other extras which include Sudoku, Crosswords, Chess and Pandora internet radio.

“One thing I needed with my reader was the ability to access the Internet at times. This is an area where the NookColor beats out all the e-ink readers with smooth and responsive access to the Net. I found the touch keyboard easy to use, and the rotating display helpful. ”

“Flash functionality is not available yet (but is planned) and a lot of people are experiencing difficulty with email and other text box typing. I believe this will be fixed very soon, but for now the web is more of a “read-only” experience.”

“The Nook Color does a WONDERFUL job as an e-reader of not only books, but also magazines and newspapers.”

“Nook uses the ePub format, a widely used open format. Amazon uses a proprietary ebook format. Many libraries will “lend” ebooks in the ePub format, which works with nook but not kindle. However, a free and reputable program called Calibre allows you to translate ebooks from one format to another – it supports many formats, including ePub and Kindle. The only catch is that it doesn’t work with copy-protected ebooks, so you can’t, for example, buy a Kindle book (which is copy protected) and translate it to ePub so you can read it on a Nook.”

Pandigital Novel Digital Book Reader (PRD07T10WWH7) with 7" Color Screen, Wi-Fi - White

Pandigital Novel Digital Book Reader

The Pandigital Novel Digital Book Reader has built-in storage capacity of 1GB and a display size of 7″.  It has a great color spectrum with a TFT-LCD screen with a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 and a 500MHZ processor.   It is Wi-Fi enabled and weighs 2.2 lbs, which is a little on the heavy side.

Page turns are smooth and it does have the options for font size and night reading.

Downloading books from Barnes and Noble is seamless and easy. Touch screen is fine if you use the tip of your finger or fingernail…it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you figure it out, it’s pretty simple.

Pandigital has actually released a firmware update to make the white and black versions just an android tablet. The black ones have a matte screen, are lighter, but less responsive to touch. The white models use completely different hardware, a Samsung processor, and a better touch screen.

Pandigital supports Android 1.6 for both models, white and black.

It has WI-FI… can store photos, can take SD-cards, has an alram and calendar, can store music. You can check your emails and do facebook as well. Another advantage is that MS Office documents and Adobe pdfs can be read by this unit.

“I’ve read all the bad press on this item but it’s mostly by those wanting desktop performance in a handheld. First as the other reviewer said it is mainly an ereader meaning it won’t do Adobe Photoshop CS5. It’s a little weighty at 19oz but most books I read tend to be heavy as well. The web surfing is perfectly fine if the wifi connection is a good one.”

“I have a Pandigital White (faster and more upgradable) I have upgraded to Android 2.0 (from download from pandigital site) and upgraded internal memory to 8 gigs and have a 32 gig SD card in the SD reader slot. Yes you can download from the Android market store! (but ONLY after upgrading!)”

“I also purchased my Pandigital …but I’m sending it back. The main reason is that all the programs on this device sucks up all the memory and makes things sluggish and freezes up screens. That is very important when you are considering adding Android Apps. I don’t think it will be able to handle much of any program you download due to space demands.”

The Sony PRS-505 Portable Digital e-Reader System weighs only 9 ounces so it’s light enough for holding for extended periods.

It has internal 192MB memory, displays CONNECT eBook online store items, displays PDFs and Word files, plays MP3 files and has a memory slot that holds a 2GB Secure Digital Memory Card as well as a Memory Stick up to 8GB.

The text is highly readable under the brightest of lights and font size can be adjusted.

The e-reader supports RTF, TXT and PDF formats without conversion.

It is able to store multiple bookmarks if you read many books at the same time. It is easy to add books to either the main memory, memory card or memory stick by simply dragging and dropping.

On the negative side Mac and Linux users are not catered for as the Sony software requires MS Windows.  Parallels and Bootcamp are not real solutions here as die-hard Mac users hate using these substitutes.

There is no HTML support.  The refresh rate is sluggish. There is no backlight so you can’t read it in bed with then lights off.

“Fun and easy to use. It’s lightweight and you can hold a lot of books in the interior. The e-ink technology is remarkable. Its a lot like reading a real book. Fonts can be enlarged.”

“While large type PDF documents can be read on the E-reader, it is ineffective as a document retrieval system.  If the E-reader is to be used for reading electronic books, I’d give it 5 stars”

“Sony Repair will obviously say or do anything they can in order to not honor their warranty, and the cost of the repair is almost the same as buying a new unit. If you get one of these things that doesn’t have any problems, you’ll probably be happy with the unit, but if it has a problem, you’re stuck.”
